I am such a bleeding heart.

There is a calico cat in the neighborhood who has always been very friendly. I assumed she was someone's outdoor (ugh) cat, being that she was so socialized.

Yesterday I stopped to pet her and she was very thin and dirty. I noticed that her nipples were swollen--- she'd had kittens recently.

I went to the store, got some food, and fed her. Sat and petted her for a bit and she looked up and me and the following conversation ensued:

Cat: You're mine and you'll be taking me home with you.
Beth: Um, I already have a cat and my roommates will be pissed if I do that.
Cat: Yeah, that's gonna suck for you, but I don't make the rules.
Beth: I've already promised the spot to someone else.
Cat: Uh, huh. Because three is SO MUCH HARDER than two.
Beth: If I bring you home, your kittens will starve.
Cat: Okay, stall if you want to, but this is inevitable, because you're MINE motherfucker.
Beth: Fuck you, cat, I am NOT bringing you home with me.
Cat: ... riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Today when I went to feed her, I found a little orange kitten. His face was dirty and he came right over to me. So, I did what any reasonable person would do.

I put him in my bag and speed-walked home.

I gave him some water and towels and put him in a large box in the bathroom. Then I went back out for mom.

The man living nearby said that he saw four kittens at first, but only the orange one recently. I sat with mom for a while, petting her while she ate. Soon a different man came out of the house and told me I had to leave the property, but that I should take the cat with me.

After all, she was, he said, "just a stray."

I scooped her up and walked as fast as I could. She snarled and tried to bite me. Luckily David was there to open the door and I plunked her into the bathroom with kitten, where the two of them have been for the last half hour.

I am going to go look for the other kittens again, but if they haven't been seen in a week... the streets of Brooklyn are not an easy place for kittens.

For now, here's mom:

And baby (it's a boy):

I need to name them to take them to the vet... any suggestions?

Do you need help on a kitten hunt? Also being a not yet, but soon to be cat owner, I don't know any vets. Well I know of my friend's vet, but I don't know costliness, etc. I can ask or put you in touch, if you like.

you're awesome for taking them, not many people would just take in 2 strays..
i suggest Grimm for the little boy (like the brothers Grimm, from the fairytales)
i don't know about mother cat.. maybe Fortuna (like lucky, because you really are hers now ;))

Name the mother Ella and the kitten Fitzgerald.

gosh, she's got glorious whiskers! I don't know why, but I've always been fascinated by cat whiskers!

You're amazing

They're GORGEOUS. I wish I could take momcat home with me.

For momma's name, I suggest Delilah.. and for baby, I suggest Pogo. I have no idea why, but those names were the first that popped into my head.

I do really like cherenkovradio's suggestion though, haha.

PS: A Softer World is my favourite thing ever. I have both Emily and Joey as friends on my LJ and Twitter. :3

The last cat I picked up off the street was named Delilah for, like, a day and then we found out it was a he. ;) I like the name a lot though...

Haha! Aww. My friend's mom got a cat and named it Bella, but later found out that it's actually a he.. but she's still her "little girl", so her cat is essentially transgendered.

I love the name [and the song] too. Whenever I have a kid, if it's a girl, I might name her Delilah.

Don't worry. You're not the only bleeding heart out there. There's a family down the street that has a bunch of loose cats (by this, I mean, not neutered and possibly never see a vet). I feel bad for the cats and am trying to get up the nerve to talk to the family about taking the animals to ARNO (Animal Rescue of New Orleans) where they'll neuter them and vaccinate them for cheap.

Ugh, I hate when people don't neuter their pets... even if if you MUST keep them outside at least get them fixed! Good luck talking to the family... it may just be that they don't have the money to care for the animals properly and will welcome the help.

I hope so. *fingers crossed*

Mother might be a bit crazy... female torties often are.

The kitten looks so TINY and sad. :(

Mom is probably crazy, but I hope since she's more calico than torie she'll be spared. Cinderella is a torie with alllllllllllllllll the stereotypical crazy, so I'm used to it. And she's already more docile than Cinderella was when I got her--- no blood drawn so far!

Kitten is so adorable. He is wrapped around mom's neck in the cage and is just the cutest thing.

That's so funny- I'd never heard that, but it makes perfect sense now. A few years ago I fostered a litter of kittens. There were 4 of them and one of them was a female tortie, and she was crazy. Twitchy and odd. You could just tell there was something a little bit off about her. But she was raised in exactly the same circumstances as her brothers and sisters, who were typical cuddly little kittens.

They are so cute!

I hate when people say something like "it's just a stray" It is an animal that feels pain and hunger all the same.

It is so sweet of you to take them in.

I like the Ella Fitzgerald idea for the names.

Gosh, I love you so much. Kittens!!!

You totally rock, Beth! These kitties are very lucky (mama cat is a good judge of humans). Good luck with the kitten hunt.

I like Ella and Fitzgerald too!

Poor babies! I found a bleeding tortie outside (friendliest little girl ever) last 4th of July and wanted to keep her so badly... named her Jessi (so I could be "Jessi's girl" - I'm lame, I know), kept her at my dad's for a few days, then took her to the shelter because mom said I could absolutely not keep her because I already have 2 cats. Now we both feel terrible because no one at the shelter seems to have any idea which cat I was talking about. =(

Good luck with the naming - the hardest part!

You're awesome, Beth. I'd have been hard pressed to refuse as well.

Aww. Kitties. I mean, how could you NOT take them home? Right?

Poor kitties! The mother is gorgeous. And opinionated, so following your hint I would suggest Lizzy (my favourite Austen heroine). The kitten I would call Horatio, but then again I am strange in those ways...

Horatio is unique. I like it. =)

Oh, they're so lovely. And lucky.

I very much like the Ella and Fitzgerald thing, too (or some variation on the same with another split-up name that you like).

I would also suggest Eva and Angelo, but that's only because those are the names of the characters in the poem I'm writing a paper on right now...

Are you taking donations to help with Vet costs? They both are going to probably need doctor care to get back on track.

Please let me know, I want to help, even if it's just a little.

They're beautiful. I have my fingers crossed you find the other kittens.

Cato (for the adorable orange kitten).

You should name a cat Amara. I've always wanted to do that, name something after me... That and name something Fire so I can go outside and call it ;]

i know it's a bit late for name suggestions, but i've got a few:

little boy kitten: saul (my russian grandpa's name - i love it), louie, hubert, percy, henry, norbert, monty, edward/eddy, milton (i had a greyhound with that name).

mother kitty: edna, eunice (those are my kitties' names - named after old ladies), leila, edith/edie, harriet, evelyn (shout out to amanda and jason haha), audrey, ella, natalie, abigail/abbie.

as you can see, i'm a big fan of naming pets with human names/old people names.

take care,
